INVESTING: What You Don’t Hear in the News

If you regularly listen to the news, you have probably noticed the media’s obsession with tariffs, interest rates, political drama, employment, trade tensions, and deficits. They know fear sells and they use it to keep us tuning in to their shows.

With all the pessimism going around, it may surprise you to hear us say something remarkable continues to happen in the investing world. The great companies of America and the world continue to do their job and do it well. They aren’t sitting still. They are innovating, improving, building, selling and growing. They continue to create products, services, and solutions people want and need. Human ingenuity and creativity, designed and gifted to us by our Creator, remains a great cause for optimism when it comes to investing.

One area that has particularly stood out this year is international stocks. For a while, they lagged behind their American counterparts; but recently the strength they have exhibited is encouraging. They help illustrate why diversification and rebalancing are important. A good portfolio includes a mix – and from time to time, one part will outperform another.

It is also good to remember that markets don’t move in a straight line. They zig and they zag. No one can know what will happen, and we could see a correction in the months ahead. This wouldn’t be a surprise or a cause for concern. It is a normal part of the investor experience and a long-term mindset.

“Everything’s fine” doesn’t make for a great news segment, but it is often the truth. Underneath the noise, progress keeps happening – whether it’s breakthroughs in technology, advances in science, or the potential for peace in troubled regions. Stay invested. Stay diversified. Stay patient. And stay optimistic.
