If you are looking to get serious about sticking to a budget in 2026, there are several methods you can use. Various experts may favor one method over another, but ultimately you should choose the method that resonates best with you so you will stick to it for long-term success.

Spending Trackers – This method simply tracks your spending and puts it in a category so you can see where you money is going. If you have no idea where all your money has gone at the end of the month, this might be a first step to begin the budgeting process.

Percentage-Based Budgeting –  In this method, percentages are assigned to each category in your budget to suggest how much income should be spent (housing, food, entertainment, etc. or needs, wants, savings, etc.). This method is much less detail-oriented than zero-based budgeting, but can be a helpful starting place for those who are not detail-oriented or suffer from decision fatigue.

Zero-Based Budgeting – As the name suggests, every dollar is assigned a job in your budget. At the end of the month, there are zero dollars that are not put to work and left to chance. It is the most proactive way to control your spending, saving, debt repayment, and giving. This is ultimately where every budget should aim, but if your personality doesn’t resonate with the details, you might want to begin with another method to ease into a routine of budgeting.

Spreadsheets – It may seem “old school,” but if you love spreadsheets, then go for it! Spreadsheets allow you to be creative and flexible in setting up a system that is uniquely customized to you.

Accountability is a big part of budgeting. Consider if a budgeting app would be helpful. Many can sync for multiple users (great for spouses!) and connect to your bank account and credit/debit cards. A couple popular apps with good reviews are YNAB and EveryDollar.

Finally, we encourage you to stop thinking of a budget as being restrictive. Instead, think of it as a tool that puts your money to work for you. Following a budget that reflects your priorities ultimately brings freedom and peace to your financial life.
